Kayaks are simple, classic vessels that are usually propelled by a double sided paddle. However, today’s kayaks come with a number of other forms of propulsion from pedals to motors.
Most paddle/pedal crafts don’t require the same registration issues and fees as motorized kayaks, but if you choose to buy or update your kayak with a trolling motor (or something similar) then you will need to align with your state’s regulations for motorized vessels. This is different from a launch permit.
Most states have different rules as soon as your kayak is fitted with a motor. However, those rules can change by state and over time as new regulations are implemented.
In order to register your kayak in most states you will need a registration form, manufacturer’s certificate of origin (MCO), bill of sale (with serial number), and applicable fees.
Some states allow you to fill out the form online or send in a PDF. Other states will require you to mail in the form or bring them to the applicable office.
For your convenience we’ve attempted to track down the websites of each state so you can research their requirements.
