How to Register Your Motorized Kayak

Registering Your Motorized Kayak

Kayaks are simple, classic vessels that are usually propelled by a double-sided paddle. However, today’s kayaks come with a variety of propulsion options, from pedals to motors.

Most paddle/pedal crafts powered by human effort don’t require the same registration issues and fees as motorized kayaks, but if you choose to buy or update your kayak with a trolling motor (or something similar), then you will need to align with your state’s regulations for motorized vessels.

Most states have different rules once your kayak is fitted with a motor. However, those rules can change by state and over time as new regulations are implemented.

In order to register your kayak in most states, you will need a registration form, a manufacturer’s statement of origin (MSO), a bill of sale (with serial number), and applicable fees. Get started with the Brooklyn Kayak Company’s MSO. This link is also located on the footer of our home page.

Some states allow you to fill out the form online or send in a PDF. Other states will require you to mail in the form or bring it to the applicable office.

For your convenience we’ve attempted to track down the websites of each state so you can research their requirements.
