Kayak Fishing Tips for Women Anglers

As kayak fishing continues to gain in popularity, more and more women are joining the ranks of avid anglers. Female paddlers should consider a few tips as they start on their fishing adventure.

Kayak Types for Women Anglers

Fit and Size Considerations

  • Adjustability: Choosing a kayak with ample room to adjust for size is essential for women who have a slighter build than men. Adjustable footrests, higher seats, and ergonomics that accommodate a range of sizes are vital for female kayakers.
  • Low Volume: Women might want to consider kayaks that have an LV designation. This means “low volume” and is better for those with a smaller stature. These kayaks offer better reach and easier paddling for those with smaller builds. Low Volume kayaks are often lighter as well, so they are easier to transport and lift for cartopping. However, they might not be able to carry as much weight, so pack light.

Sit-on-Top vs Sit-in

  • Sit-on-Top kayaks are often the preferred design for anglers of all sizes. They offer stability, ease of entry / exit, and safety on the open water. They are also easier to reenter if capsized, which can be important for those with less upper-body strength.
  • Sit-in kayaks offer better protection from the elements. So, if you are planning on cold-water fishing, a woman angler might find a sit-in with a spray skirt warmer than a sit-on. However, a sit-in can be challenging to reenter from deep water. And might feel less stable for casting and landing fish, as well as less adapted for storage and access to gear.

Fishing Features

  • Kayaks with built-in features are an excellent choice. Rod holders, gear tracks / accessory rails, and storage options make it easy for women anglers to access gear on the go.
  • Wide kayaks are best for stability and allow women anglers to stand up to cast and sight fish. Those with shorter stature have a lower center of gravity, so they may have an easier time standing on a kayak.
  • Pedal-drive kayaks can be an excellent, hands-free propulsion system for fishing on the move. However, women anglers should make sure that the kayak has adjustable seat options so they can reach the pedals easily and comfortably.

Weight & Transportation Issues

  • Women anglers, especially solo kayakers, should ensure that they can safely load, carry and launch their kayak. Lighter kayaks will be key for smaller paddlers.
  • Consider inflatable kayaks if space and weight are serious issues.

Women-Specific Gear for Kayak Fishing

Kayak Fishing Clothing for Women

  • Technical apparel: To really dress the part, look for specialized apparel with sun-protection (UPF 50+), especially if you plan to spend a long day out in the elements. Fishing pants and shirts feature pockets and other details that can enhance your fishing game.
  • Seasonally Appropriate: If you don’t get specialized clothing, at least make sure what you wear is dry-wicking, insulating / breathable (depending on the season), and comfortable.
  • Footwear: Invest in vulcanized-rubber or neoprene footwear for warmth, arch support, and secure footing (especially if you plan to stand up in your kayak).

Sun Protection & Accessories

  • Hat: Sun protection is vital in warm or cold weather, so a hat or other head protection is a good idea. A breathable, five-panel, or wide-brimmed cap with a dark brim improves comfort and reduces glare.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes, too. Polarized lenses can also aid in sighting fish better and reduce glare off the water for better fishing.
  • SPF Sunscreen: Apply and reapply sunscreen throughout the day while fishing. Sunlight off the water can hasten sunburn, so don’t neglect protection.

Organization

  • Dry Bag: A waterproof bag keeps essentials dry and organized. Keys, wallet / purse, and smartphone can all be kept safe in a dry bag stashed in a hatch or belted around the waist for easier access.
  • Fishing Vest: Women’s-specific vests can be a game-changer for easy access to fishing essentials. Multi-panel, flexible, and non-restrictive fits aid in your fishing adventure.

Fishing Gear

  • Lean into built-in features like rod holders, gear tracks / accessory rails, and storage to cut down on weight and stay organized.
  • Choose a wider-beam kayak for stability, which can enhance casting and landing fish, but not so wide that it becomes unwieldy to manage.
  • Consider a pedal-drive system for hands-free fishing, but double-check dimensions. Women with shorter stature will want to ensure that the pedal reach and seat adjust to provide adequate comfort.

Kayak Fishing Safety & Comfort Strategies for Women

Safety for Women

  • Proper PFD: Ensure your PFD fits properly and is comfortable enough to wear all day. A life-saving device doesn’t work if it isn’t worn. There are many low-profile options today that are stylish and functional.
  • Dress for Immersion: While one rarely plans on taking a swim, it is also necessary to prepare as if you might. Dress appropriately and pack an extra set of clothes.
  • Be Visible: Use brightly colored kayaks, paddlers, PFDs, and even flags. This is especially important if you are in a smaller kayak.
  • Practice Self-Rescue: Make sure you know self-rescue and how to reenter your kayak should it get tipped over. When launching, always make sure one side is clear to allow re-entry in case of a capsize.

Comfort Strategies

  • Padded seats: Choose your kayak seats with additional padding or memory foam so you can endure all day fishing in comfort.
  • Adjustable outfitting: Ensure that you can adjust seat position, footrests, and thigh braces (if applicable). If you don’t fit comfortably in your craft, you will not be able to paddle efficiently and effectively.

Focusing on women-specific fit, comfort, and safety makes kayak fishing more enjoyable and hassle-free for women. Get empowered to spend more time - and catch more fish - on your kayaking adventure.
