Yes, you can still paddle your kayak even with a pedal system. Whether you remove the pedals or not, you can still dip your paddle in the water. In fact, you should always have a paddle with you when you kayak, in case of an emergency. Even if your pedal system breaks, you can get where you are going with a paddle. Flipper pedal propulsion (also known as push pedal drive) uses an alternating motion to move fin-like flippers to propel a kayak. The back-and-forth motion on the pedals is easier on the knees and joints. The flipper system moves the kayak much like a penguin moves through the water. Most of the time, flipper drives only move forward, not backward.  Flippers are often suitable for shallow water as they are less likely to get caught in the weeds.

Propeller (prop) drive systems (also known as rotational drives) use a pedalling motion to move a propeller to propel the kayak. This circular motion is the same motion used to ride a bike. Prop systems often have a stronger push than their flipper counterpoints. Prop drives can also have “instant reverse,” which means you can move the kayak backward with a back pedalling motion.
