How do you plan to paddle?

RELAXED RECREATION

Prioritize: Stability, Comfort, Portability

For calm lakes, bays, and casual outings, choose a kayak with a comfortable seat and manageable weight. Shorter kayaks are excellent for maneuverability and easier to turn.

EXERCISE

Prioritize: Paddle vs. Pedal System, Efficient Hull, Kayak Weight

  • Paddle kayak: upper body, core, back, shoulders, and cardiovascular exercise
  • Pedal kayak: legs and cardiovascular exercise; easier to maintain a steady workout pace
  • Efficient hull shape: Choose a longer, moderately narrow kayak—generally 11–14 feet long and 27–32 inches wide. It will track straighter and maintain speed with less wasted effort than a short, very wide recreational kayak.

Manageable weight

Consider the entire workout, including loading and launching. A kayak you can transport safely will get used more often. Modular or lighter models can be especially practical if lifting or storage is a concern.

FISHING

Prioritize: Stability, Comfort, Storage, Hands-Free Propulsion, Accessory Options

Look for features to keep essential gear close at hand: rod holders, accessory rails, tackle storage, elevated seating, rudder control, and pedal-drive and motor-capability.

LONG DISTANCE TOURING

Prioritize: Efficiency, Control, Storage

Longer, narrower kayaks track more efficiently and maintain speed with less effort. Covered storage provides better protection, and pedal-drive or motor capability helps slice through the current.

TANDEM & FAMILY

Prioritize: Capacity, Seat Spacing, Stability, Transport & Storage

Paddle with a partner, child, or pet, and share the gear and effort. Pay close attention to total weight capacity, seating flexibility, and kayak size and weight when carried on land.
