10 Must-Have Kayak Mods
Whether you have been kayaking for a hot minute or you’re just getting started, whether you have the latest, greatest ‘yak or a hand-me-down from your brother-in-law, there are a few things you can do to upgrade your kayak to get the most out of your experience.
From major updates to minor adaptations, check out these enhancements for your ‘yak. In no particular order, here are 10 must-have kayak modifications that will make your day on the water the best it can be.
Major Kayak Modifications / Upgrades
1.Track-mounted holders
So many kayaks today come with tracks already mounted because they really are a “no-brainer” for kayak modifications. If your kayak doesn’t already have them, you will want to get them.
Track-mounts allow you to add amazing features to your kayak. However, if they aren’t already mounted, they will require you to drill holes in your kayak so they are a fairly major mod. You can DIY or take it to a professional. Once you have the gear tracks mounted, you can explore a wide range of accessories that can be slid into the track and mounted to your kayak.
For example:
- bait stations
- electronics (phone mounts, go-pro mounts, etc)
- camera mounts
- fishfinders / transducer mounts
- Outriggers
- anchor cleats
- cup/rod holders
2. Anchor trolley system / Anchor pole
Another modification that can benefit die-hard kayakers, particularly anglers, is an anchor trolley system. If you want to keep your kayak anchored, this is a great way to do it. Some of these systems can mount without drilling, but others will need some drilling to install it.
3. Bimini top
If you are planning to spend all day in the sun, then you might want to consider a bimini (awning) top for your kayak. Today’s options include those that mount on your seat or your gear tracks, but many of them still require some drilling for the hardware to secure it correctly. So, this may be a simple kayak mod or it could be a more extensive upgrade depending on the size and style.
4. Seat upgrade or seat cushion
Depending on your current situation, this might be the first upgrade you consider. A good kayak seat can make or break a day on the water. Something as simple as a cushion can help to support your back and bum, but you might want to check out further full-seat modifications that can adjust, elevate, slide, and support. Some of these might work with your kayak”s configuration and hardware but others might need more extensive modifications.
5. Trolling motor
A trolling motor modification is particularly for the kayak anglers out there as it probably has the most benefit for those who are spending the day searching the waterways for the best place to drop a line. A trolling motor also allows you to stay on course (some even hands-free) or “troll” your lines. Many trolling motors can be added to kayaks with pre-drilled holes that come ready to receive them, but others might require more modification to your kayak to mount them correctly.
Minor Kayak Modifications / Upgrades
6. Storage crate / storage
Maximizing your storage is extremely important for kayakers of all stripes. Whether you need to carry your snacks and water or baits and lure, you want to be as efficient as possible with your space. Many kayak anglers use a milk-crate storage system that can hold and organize their equipment for easy transport. It can be secured on the kayak with bungees. Other nice upgrades for storage include velcro straps and pouches that can be used to hold items securely. Many of these can attach to hardware already on the ‘yak for easy modification.
7. Floor mats or carpet
Another fairly easy addition to your kayak are floor mats or carpet. This can help to increase grip in an otherwise slippery environment. Placing a rubber mat or other sound dampening material on the deck of your kayak can also help to reduce fish disturbance. You can sneak up more easily on your prey when a dropped rod, lure, or water bottle doesn’t echo off your plastic kayak and scare away the fish. Deck pads are extremely helpful for stand-up fishing as well.
8. Stick-on lights
If you are planning on kayaking at night - or just wanna bring the party - there are some fun stick on lights that make an easy addition to your kayak. Of course, having navigational lights is required for nighttime paddling, but even lights to illuminate tasks inside your kayak can be helpful.
9. Kayak battery (lithium)
With all the electronics that are running on kayaks today, you might find it wise to invest in a battery for your kayak. Investing in a light-weight, slim lithium battery is a good choice for a power source on your ‘yak. They are compact, lightweight, and designed for portability so they can easily ride along and then go home with you for a charge before heading out again. Secure them in a water tight container and then can keep your fishfinder, camera, phone, GPS, and more, good to go all day.
10. Magnet tape
This ingenious device is the perfect modification for anglers. Simply apply some of this double-side tape to the inside of your kayak near your seat and it safely holds hooks, small tools, and lures that might otherwise slip and spill and cause a mess. Since you are already negotiating a paddle, a rod, and who knows what else, you can benefit from this tape and safely hold your small metal items. Stick the double-sided, waterproof, tape wherever it is most convenient for you.
